Quantum in Action: Australian innovation creating pathways to industry adoption

A new Quantum Australia use case brochure showcases how Australian quantum technologies are being developed and applied to challenges across energy, resources, defence, healthcare, telecommunications and advanced computing.

Quantum technologies are moving beyond the laboratory and into commercial and operational environments.

Across Australia, researchers and companies are developing new ways to measure underground structures, navigate without GPS, strengthen critical infrastructure, improve disease detection and tackle complex computational challenges.

Quantum Australia’s new Quantum in Action brochure highlights nine examples of this work. Together, the case studies demonstrate the breadth of Australia’s quantum capability and the growing opportunities for industry to engage.

From emerging capability to practical application

Quantum technology is not a single field or product. It encompasses quantum computing, sensing, communications and security, with different technologies progressing at different rates.

  • Analog Quantum Circuits is developing miniaturised superconducting microwave components designed to address an important engineering barrier to scaling quantum computers.

  • Diraq is developing silicon-based quantum processors using semiconductor manufacturing techniques, while exploring how quantum optimisation could support Australia’s increasingly complex electricity networks.

  • Nomad Atomics is applying portable quantum gravimetry to underground mine monitoring, helping operators build more accurate models of cave structures and changes in subsurface density.

  • Phasor Quantum is developing diamond-based quantum magnetometers that could help autonomous underwater vehicles navigate in environments where satellite positioning signals cannot reach.

  • Quantum Brilliance is developing compact, room-temperature diamond quantum processors that can be integrated alongside conventional high-performance computing infrastructure.

  • QuantX Labs is commercialising quantum-enabled precision-timing technologies for defence, navigation, communications and other systems that require alternatives to satellite-based timing.

  • Silicon Quantum Computing is developing atomic-precision silicon quantum processors and working with organisations including Telstra to explore quantum-enhanced predictive analytics.

  • TeraGlo is developing portable material-sensing technology to provide faster, on-site analysis of rare earth deposits and other materials.

  • Avicena Systems is investigating how quantum nanomaterials and single-photon detection could improve the sensitivity of rapid diagnostic testing for human health, animal health and biosecurity.

These examples show that quantum innovation is not confined to computing. Australian capability is emerging across enabling hardware, precision sensing, timing, navigation, diagnostics and industry-specific applications.
